Collection: Quinta do Mouro

Alentejo

Quinta do Mouro is located at the gates of the city of Estremoz. For centuries it belonged to the Zagalos family, one of the city’s wealthiest.   A game of poker dictated the property’s current ownership.  Faced with the choice of a Porsche or Quinta do Mouro, in 1979, the estate came into the possession of a 26-year-old dentist, Miguel Louro.

The wine lover regularly had lunch with local winemakers, including Joao Portugal Ramos who had himself recently acquired an estate in Estremoz.  Louro planted 6ha of Aragonez, Trincadeira, AlicanteBouschet, Cabernet Sauvignon and Castelão. Louro’s inspiration came from Bordeaux, Rioja and Barolo but also Alentejo’s classical wines, which are structured, austere but very fresh and elegant.  Portugal Ramos helped Louro make the wines, which launched in 1994 and became an almost instant classic.   Currently, the farm has 27ha of vines planted mainly in schist soils and the estate is renowned for age-worthy reds, lately interesting whites.
