Collection: Anselmo Mendes

Vinho Verde

Born in Monçao in Vinho Verde – Alvarinho’s traditional heartland - Anselmo Mendes has been “studying” the Alvarinho grape since 1987.  With nine (last count) different Alvarinho cuvées, he is one of Portugal's best exponents; from entry-level up, his Alvarinhos age superbly.

Having acquired his first estate in 1997, Anselmo launched his eponymous label with the Muros de Melgaco range in 1998.  In 2008, he started restructuring the vineyards at Quinta da Torre in Moncao where, as a young boy, he had harvested grapes.  Anselmo acquired the estate (and magnificent 14th century manor house) in 2017 and now farms the biggest holding of Alvarinho in Vinho Verde's Monção e Melgaço sub-region (50 hectares).

Joined by his son Tiago, Anselmo continues to push boundaries.  His range now encompasses red Vinho Verde made in a contemporary fresh but soft and primary, fruity style.
