Douro

Located 100km to the east of Oporto, the Douro is home to the world’s largest expanse of mountainside viticulture and, at over 100-years-old, amongst Portugal’s oldest vineyards - traditional field blends. Terraced vineyards line a 100km stretch of the river Douro and its tributaries, to the north and south. Rising to a dizzying 850m, its rocky schist-strewn (occasionally granitic) vineyards face all points of the compass. With multi-faceted terroir and over 100 grape varieties, the Douro is a winemaker’s playground producing long-lived Ports and wines of every style and hue. Low yields account for the premium focus and high quality. Popular varieties (invariably blended) include Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão and Tinta Amarela (reds), Rabigato, Viosinho, Gouveio Malvasia Fina and Códega do Larinho (whites).
