The producer When the President of Wines of Portugal and a top Portuguese sommelier give you the heads up on an exciting new project, you don’t hold back!  Nuno Martins da Silva was happy to send me samples of Tictac Merlot (the less interesting of the trio), Bluníssima (the ultra-fine flagship Tinta Roriz) and this exciting Tinta Miúda – the latest addition to the range.   The long-term Lisboa winemaker (who, incidentally, interned at Pancas) was involved from the outset.  A friend, António Guerreiro, “felt impelled,” he says, to buy the old Aragonez vineyard next door in Arruda dos Vinhos “and, just like that, Monte Bluna was born.”  Convinced about the potential of the land around his aptly named village, Guerreiro then planted Tinta Miúda (Portuguese genotype) and other local varieties, including Arinto and Vital.  The elevation and soils – “even more special than we expected,” admitted da Silva - have produced terrific results thus far.  With no little ambition, Monte Bluna is, without doubt, a name to watch.   

The vineyard/ winemaking With the Atlantic to the west and and Tagus river to the east, Monte Bluna’s north-facing, windy vineyard is located on clay-limestone at 350–400m.  This cool site produces fresh wines.  The Tinta Miúda was planted in 2017.  For da Silva, the aim is to evoke the site’s “nervous acidity and limestone minerality” via old school low extraction, low alcohol wines.  Made without additions, the handpicked grapes were fermented in stainless steel and aged in a very old French oak cask for 8 months. 

Tasting notes A wine lovers’ lighter vin de soif style, this Tinta Miúda has uncommon intensity and lovely freshness and piquancy, with lifted pimento, fresh grated horse radish, white pepper and inky floral notes to its vivid wild cherry, blueberry and earthy beetroot palate.   1,077 bottles produced.

Serving recommendations Serve at a temperature of 14 to 16ºC.  Drink 2021-2023.
